Why Paver Maintenance Matters

Pavers are durable, long-lasting, and stylish, but even the best materials benefit from proper upkeep. Though Minimal, some maintenance prevents:

  • Weed growth and shifting
  • Stains from dirt, oil, or organic material
  • Surface fading or efflorescence

Proper care ensures your pavers look beautiful and last for decades, protecting your investment and your outdoor lifestyle.

1. Cleaning Your Pavers

Regular sweeping and light washing are usually all that’s needed. Removing organic material before winter or extreme rain helps prevent stains.

Tips:

  • Use a broom or garden hose to remove dirt and debris.
  • For deeper cleaning, use mild detergents.
  • Avoid commercial concrete cleaners except in extreme cases, improper use can cause permanent damage to pavers.

Pro Tip: Porcelain and luxury pavers are particularly low-maintenance and resistant to stains, making DIY care even easier.

 

2. Understanding Fading and Efflorescence

  • Fading:  With the exception of Porcelain, some color change over time is natural due to UV exposure. While it happens gradually, you can mitigate fading by applying a wet-look paver sealer to preserve vibrancy.
  • Efflorescence: A white, powdery surface residue may appear on new pavers. This is a natural occurrence in concrete caused by minerals in the pavers and will fade away with time. Porcelain does not have this issue.

Both are normal and not signs of defective materials.

3. Weed and Moss Control

Weeds and moss can grow between pavers and disrupt their stability.

  • Make sure polymeric sand is properly installed to prevent weed growth.
  • Apply a weed inhibitor if needed.
  • Remove visible weeds promptly.

In most cases weed and moss growth occur on top of the pavers and polymeric sand and do not grow through them. to prevent this keep organic matter like lawn clippings, leaves, and dirt to prevent any of this growth.

4. Proper Installation

Improper installation is the biggest reason why there is recurring maintenance. Installing without a high-quality edger will allow your pavers to shift apart over time. This will require relaying over and over again. 

 

Using regular sand instead of polymeric sand will along for pavers to become unlevel over time. Polymeric sand acts as a glue and works best when installed from the bottom of the pavers crack to the top. It 'glues' the paver together and keeps your patio level for longer. It also minimizes weed growth from between the pavers.

 

Geo-textile Landscape Fabric is necessary underneath any gravel in your yard. Landscape fabric not only prevents weeds but provides a barrier between the mud underneath and the gravel on top. Without fabric, your gravel base with be eroded away into the mud allowing for shifting to take place. 

 

Using these installation essentials in your patio will make sure you spend your time enjoying the outdoors rather then spending that time trying to maintain it year after year.

5. Sealing Your Pavers

Sealing is optional but highly recommended for color preservation and stain protection:

  • Makes cleaning easier

DIY Tip: Apply a high-quality, paver-specific sealer, such as a wet-look sealer, every 2–3 years to preserve the vibrant appearance of your patio or walkway.

6. Repairs and Replacement

Occasional repairs are normal:

  • Loose pavers: Lift, reset, and refill joints.
  • Cracked pavers: Replace with matching units. Our estimators add ~ 4% extra pavers on every order to account for having a few extra on hand if needed down the line. Products and colours get discontinued and this helps prevent issues like this from occurring.
  • Leveling issues: Inspect the base if shifting occurs. Nextbase will help prevent this.

Most repairs are DIY-friendly, saving hundreds compared to hiring a contractor.

7. Seasonal Care

  • Winter: Use plastic shovels to remove snow if needed; avoid salt-based deicers. (salt is corrosive to concrete)
  • Spring: Inspect for winter damage, refill joint sand, clean surfaces.
  • Summer: Sweep off grass clippings, and remove stains promptly.
  • Fall: Clear leaves and organic debris to prevent staining and moss growth.
